What Do Conversion Grid Questions Look Like?
Conversion grid questions test whether you can move confidently between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students are presented with a table where each row gives one known value—a decimal, a percentage, or a fraction—and must calculate the equivalent values for the empty cells in simplest form. Here is a worked example.
Start from the Decimal
Question: Row A gives the decimal 0.35. Complete the percentage and fraction.
Worked Method
Step 1: 0.35 × 100 = 35, so the percentage is 35%.
Step 2: Write 0.35 as 35100.
Step 3: Simplify 35100 by dividing top and bottom by 5: 720.
Tip: Decimals with two places can be written over 100 first, then simplified.
Rules to Help You Solve Conversion Grid Questions
To complete conversion grids like the example above, anchor to the given value and apply the matching conversion rule for each column.
🔁 Rule 1: One row, one value
The fraction, decimal, and percentage in a row must all represent the same amount.
Example: 0.35 = 35% = 720.
💯 Rule 2: Decimal to percentage
To change a decimal to a percentage, multiply the decimal by 100, then add the % sign.
Example: 0.46 becomes 46%.
➗ Rule 3: Percentage to decimal
To change a percentage to a decimal, remove the % sign and divide the number by 100.
Example: 18% becomes 0.18.
✂️ Rule 4: Simplify fractions
Fractions in the grid should be written in simplest form, so reduce the fraction after converting from a decimal or percentage.
Example: 35100 simplifies to 720.

Here are two more examples showing how to complete rows that start from a percentage or a fraction.
Start from the Percentage
Question: Row B gives the percentage 46%. Complete the decimal and fraction.
Worked Method
Step 1: Remove the % sign and divide by 100: 46 ÷ 100 = 0.46.
Step 2: Write 46% as 46100.
Step 3: Simplify 46100 by dividing top and bottom by 2: 2350.
Tip: A percent already means "out of 100", so it is usually the fastest route to the fraction.
Start from the Fraction
Question: Row C gives the fraction 950. Complete the decimal and percentage.
Worked Method
Step 1: Multiply both the top and bottom by 2 to make the bottom number 100: 950 = 18100.
Step 2: 18100 as a decimal is 0.18.
Step 3: 18100 as a percentage is 18%.
The trap: 9 out of 50 is the same as 18 out of 100, so the percentage is 18%, not 9%. Multiply both the top and bottom by the same number to keep the value unchanged.
