These worksheets combine metric conversion facts with real-world totals and sharing. Most questions ask students to decide whether to multiply, divide, or convert before choosing from five answer options.
Use the metric steps before doing anything with the answer options.
Example: 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 km = 1000 m, 1 l = 1000 ml, and 1 kg = 1000 g.
When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply by the conversion factor.
Example: 0.25 kg = 0.25 × 1000 = 250 g.
When converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide by the conversion factor.
Example: 6000 mg = 6000 ÷ 1000 = 6 g.
Some questions ask for a total, while others ask for each share. Work that out before converting.
Example: 8 l shared between 10 mugs is 0.8 l each, then 0.8 × 1000 = 800 ml.
One total, one sharing problem, and one classic place-value trap.
Question: Suresh collected 4 nails, each measuring 17 mm. How many centimetres did he collect in total?
Step 1: Find the total length first: 4 × 17 mm = 68 mm.
Step 2: Convert millimetres to centimetres. Since 1 cm = 10 mm, divide by 10.
Step 3: 68 ÷ 10 = 6.8 cm.
Tip: The total comes before the conversion because each nail is given separately.
Question: Sunil has 8 l of soup. He pours it equally into 10 mugs. How many millilitres of soup are in each mug?
Step 1: Find each share in litres: 8 ÷ 10 = 0.8 l.
Step 2: Convert litres to millilitres. Since 1 l = 1000 ml, multiply by 1000.
Step 3: 0.8 × 1000 = 800 ml.
Tip: Do not convert the whole 8 l and stop. The question asks for the amount in each mug.
Question: Two identical small buttons have a combined mass of 12000 mg. How many grams does each small button weigh?
Step 1: Find the mass of each button in milligrams: 12000 ÷ 2 = 6000 mg.
Step 2: Convert milligrams to grams. Since 1000 mg = 1 g, divide by 1000.
Step 3: 6000 ÷ 1000 = 6 g.
Tip: A tempting wrong answer is 6000 g. The number must get smaller when milligrams become grams.
