Number to words questions ask you to turn a digit number into written words. The safest method is to split the number into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones before choosing the matching answer.
The Rules Every Number to Words Question Uses
The written answer follows the place-value structure of the number. Read each section from left to right and keep the digit positions in order.

Identify the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones before reading the answer choices.
Example from the chart: 8325 starts with eight thousand.
🧱 Rule 2: Keep hundreds separate
The hundreds digit is written after the thousands part and before the tens part.
Example: The 3 in 8325 gives three hundred.
🪄 Rule 3: Join tens and ones carefully
The final two digits often form a hyphenated word such as twenty-five or thirty-seven.
Example: 25 becomes twenty-five.
✅ Rule 4: Watch for swapped place values
Wrong options often move a digit into the wrong place, such as tens of thousands instead of thousands.
Example: 5082 is five thousand, not fifty thousand.

Step 1: Split 8325 into 8 thousands, 3 hundreds, 2 tens, and 5 ones.
Step 2: Read those parts in order: eight thousand, three hundred, twenty-five.
Step 3: The matching phrase is eight thousand three hundred and twenty-five.

2. Handle a Zero in the Hundreds Place
Question: What is the number 5082 in words?
- A. five thousand and eighty
- B. fifty thousand and eighty-two
- C. six thousand and eighty-two
- D. five hundred thousand and eighty-two
- E. five thousand and eighty-two
Worked Method
Step 1: 5082 has 5 thousands, 0 hundreds, 8 tens, and 2 ones.
Step 2: The zero hundreds place is not spoken as "zero hundred".

3. Do Not Move the Thousands Digit
Question: What is the number 7037 in words?

Worked Method
Step 1: The first digit is 7 in the thousands place, so the number starts seven thousand.
Step 2: The hundreds digit is 0, so there is no hundreds word.
Step 3: 37 is read as thirty-seven.
Step 4: The correct wording is seven thousand and thirty-seven.
Answer: D. The trap: "seventy thousand" and "seven hundred thousand" move the 7 into a different place.
