The Rules Every Deductive Reasoning Question Uses

Position-based logic puzzles measure step-by-step analytical deduction. Mastery comes down to 4 core principles:

📌 Rule 1: Anchor Person & Base Position

4 Fred (Anchor = 4) Start with a known or chosen value

Start with any person whose exact position is given. Some questions give a direct anchor, while others require you to choose a clue chain and work relative to one person.

Example: If Fred = Level 4, all other levels can be calculated as offsets from Fred.

↕️ Rule 2: Directional Offset Math

Above levels: + / race ahead: - Below levels: - / race behind: + Apply direction sign correctly

Translate each phrase into arithmetic for that scale. Floors and car-park levels use above = add, below = subtract. Race ranks use ahead = subtract, behind = add. In the theatre-row puzzles, the generated row scale uses in front = add and behind = subtract.

Example: Bianca = Fred (4) - 3 = Level 1. In a race, 2 places behind 1st means Position 1 + 2 = Position 3.

🔗 Rule 3: Chaining Relational Clues

Peter: 5 Camila: 1 Use derived values to solve secondary clues

Once a person's position is derived, plug that value into later clues that reference them. This is essential when a question has no direct numerical anchor for every person.

Example: "Camila is 4 levels below Peter (5)" → Camila = 5 - 4 = Level 1.

Level 1: Camila & Bianca Match pair to options A–E Exactly one pair shares a position index

List all 5 calculated positions. Look for the two people with identical position numbers and match that pair to the correct option.

Example: Camila (Level 1) and Bianca (Level 1) share Level 1 → Answer D.

1. Multi-Storey Car Park Level Deduction

Question: In a multi-storey car park, Fred parks on level 4. Bianca parks three levels below Fred. Peter parks one level above Fred. Camila parks four levels below Peter. Lucas parks two levels above Camila. Who parks on the same level?

Options: A: Peter and Fred  |  B: Lucas and Fred  |  C: Camila and Lucas  |  D: Camila and Bianca  |  E: Camila and Fred

What it's testing: Rule 1 & Rule 2 — anchor identification and relative level offsets.

Step-by-step evaluation:

  • Anchor: Fred = Level 4.
  • Bianca: 3 levels below Fred → 4 − 3 = Level 1.
  • Peter: 1 level above Fred → 4 + 1 = Level 5.
  • Camila: 4 levels below Peter → 5 − 4 = Level 1.
  • Lucas: 2 levels above Camila → 1 + 2 = Level 3.
  • Identify shared pair: Both Camila and Bianca park on Level 1.

What it's testing: Rule 2 & Rule 3 — race rank direction (behind = higher number, ahead = lower number).

Step-by-step evaluation:

  • Anchor: Linda = Position 5.
  • Naomi: Linda is 4 places behind Naomi → Naomi = 5 − 4 = Position 1.
  • Bob: Linda is 1 place behind Bob → Bob = 5 − 1 = Position 4.
  • Jack: 3 places ahead of Bob (4) → Jack = 4 − 3 = Position 1.
  • John: 2 places behind Jack (1) → John = 1 + 2 = Position 3.
  • Identify shared pair: Both Jack and Naomi finished in Position 1.

Answer: B (Jack and Naomi)

Tip: Remember that finishing "ahead" in a race means a lower numerical rank (e.g., 1st place is ahead of 4th place).

3. Block of Flats Multi-Step Deduction

Question: In a block of flats, Leo lives on floor 2. Linda lives two floors above Leo. Linda lives one floor below Lucas. Richard lives four floors above Leo. Luciana lives two floors above Linda. Who lives on the same floor?

What it's testing: Rule 3 & Rule 4 — chaining clues through intermediate derived people without mixing up references.

Step-by-step evaluation:

  • Anchor: Leo = Floor 2.
  • Linda: 2 floors above Leo → 2 + 2 = Floor 4.
  • Lucas: Linda (4) is 1 floor below Lucas → Lucas = 4 + 1 = Floor 5.
  • Richard: 4 floors above Leo (2) → Richard = 2 + 4 = Floor 6.
  • Luciana: 2 floors above Linda (4) → Luciana = 4 + 2 = Floor 6.
  • Identify shared pair: Both Luciana and Richard live on Floor 6.

Answer: A (Luciana and Richard)

Tip: Pay close attention to who the clue is relative to. "Linda lives one floor below Lucas" means Lucas is higher than Linda (Floor 5 vs Floor 4).
