Move letter questions ask you to remove one letter from the first word and insert that same letter into the second word. The remaining letters stay in order, and both results must be real words.
These puzzles are small, but every answer has to obey the same strict transformation rule.
Take one letter out of the first word. The other letters must remain in their original order.
Example: racer can lose r to become race.
The removed letter is inserted into the second word. You do not change it into a different letter.
Example: pea plus the moved r becomes pear.
A move only works if the shortened first word and the expanded second word are both valid.
Example: darts and but become dart and bust by moving s.
The moved letter can be inserted at the start, middle, or end of the second word.
Example: piped and lay become pipe and lady by moving d to the end.
Three useful moves: try the extra-looking letter, preserve letter order, and check that the second word still makes sense.
Question: racer pea ______ _____
Remove r from racer. The remaining letters spell race.
Put the same r into pea to make pear.
Answer: move r - race and pear. Tip: The shortened first word must keep the original letter order.
Question: piped lay ______ _____
Remove d from piped to make pipe.
Now insert d into lay. Putting it at the end creates lady.
Answer: move d - pipe and lady. Tip: Do not only test the start of the second word; the letter can go anywhere.
Question: rifle lip ______ _____
Remove f from rifle. The remaining letters spell rile.
Put the f at the start of lip to make flip.
Answer: move f - rile and flip. Tip: A move is not enough by itself; both finished words must be real words.
